01 โ€” Project Overview

Why NAMMA BUS?

The Tamil Nadu Government's current bus booking system has significant flow issues and lacks essential features required by everyday travellers. This project redesigns the experience with a user-friendly, efficient, and inclusive mobile app โ€” supporting local intra-city routes, express and long-distance travel, cashless ticketing with UPI, quick booking in just 4 clicks, and seamless ticket tracking.

Problem

Cash & Physical Tickets

Users must carry exact change. Physical tickets are easily lost or forgotten, causing inconvenience and disputes at boarding.

Goal

Simple Cashless Booking

Design a mobile app that simplifies ticket booking for Tamil Nadu's local and rural government buses with UPI and digital QR tickets.

Solution

Book in 4 Clicks

A streamlined mobile experience supporting local and express bookings, QR e-tickets, live tracking, and 10 regional languages.

02 โ€” Problem Statement

What's broken today

Rural bus Tamil Nadu
Rural Tamil Nadu โ€” the everyday reality

Millions of daily travellers across Tamil Nadu depend on government buses โ€” yet the booking experience is stuck in a pre-digital era. No digital booking, no cashless option, no seat visibility.

  • ๐Ÿ’ธ
Exact change requiredKeeping exact change is increasingly difficult, causing delays and frustration at boarding.
  • ๐ŸŽซ
Physical tickets lost easilyPassengers accidentally misplace tickets, causing disputes with conductors.
  • ๐ŸšŒ
Rush hour chaosIn crowded buses it's hard to collect tickets โ€” passengers miss stops or get overcharged.
  • ๐ŸŒ
Language barriersExisting apps are English-only, alienating rural users comfortable in Tamil and regional languages.
  • ๐Ÿ“ต
No rural route supportSETC app and major players only cover intercity routes โ€” local rural routes are entirely unserved digitally.
03 โ€” Research & Competitive Analysis

Understanding the landscape

We analysed three main competitors to identify gaps. Most lacked consistency in UX, rural accessibility, and language support. NAMMA BUS fills every gap.

04 โ€” Empathy Map

Inside the traveller's mind

Through interviews and contextual research, we mapped what users say, think, do, and feel about the current bus booking experience.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Says

Booking tickets should be quick and simple
Refunds and cancellations should be hassle-free
I want to see seat availability before paying
I need to catch the bus on time, easily and smoothly

๐Ÿ’ญ Thinks

Is this platform trustworthy with my payment?
I don't want hidden charges at checkout
If I miss the bus, can I easily reschedule?
Will the bus arrive on schedule or get delayed?

โšก Does

Compares fares across different apps before booking
Shares trip details with family/friends for safety
Checks bus reviews, timings, and seat layouts
Frequently books last-minute or recurring daily tickets

โค๏ธ Feels

Frustrated with confusing booking flows or unreliable buses
Happy when they get real-time updates and affordable prices
Relieved when booking is smooth and confirmed instantly
Anxious about safety, cancellations, or delays
05 โ€” User Personas

Who we designed for

Two primary personas emerged from research โ€” representing daily professional travellers and young tech-savvy commuters.

13 โ€” Key Takeaways

What I learned

๐ŸŽฏ

Convenience & Trust are central

Travellers prioritize quick booking, real-time updates, and reliable buses over flashy features. Every decision was validated against this.

๐Ÿ’ก

Transparency builds confidence

Clear pricing, visible seat layouts, and simple refund policies reduce anxiety and increase trust โ€” critical for a payment-first app.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Different personas, different needs

Daily commuters value speed and repeat booking; occasional travellers need safety details, comfort options, and flexible schedules.

โœ‚๏ธ

Simplicity wins every time

Overly complex flows frustrate users. Streamlined booking, secure payments, and instant confirmation are non-negotiable essentials.

๐ŸŒŸ

Delight through thoughtful features

Real-time bus tracking, saved passenger profiles, and loyalty rewards create lasting user engagement beyond mere utility.

๐ŸŒ

Language is foundation, not a feature

Supporting 10 regional languages โ€” with Tamil first โ€” fundamentally shaped the layout, iconography, and interaction model.
